Duplex 2205 Strength
Reverse bending stress tests have been done on Duplex 2205, which is different from SS316, at room temperature. In the tests, the fatigue limit/yield strength of Duplex 2205 is about twice as high as it is for the other metal.
Duplex 2205 Corrosion Resistance
Duplex 2205 flanges give the industry a better corrosion solution than stainless. They have good sulfide corrosion resistance, as well as better chloride pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 317L. For example, the combination of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen makes Duplex 2205 flanges good at protecting against chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, which makes them good for marine and brackish water environments, as well as some food processing applications. The fact that pitting corrosion can happen when there is an oxidising media around is important to keep in mind. In these situations, the passive (protective) layer of the Duplex 2205 material may be damaged, and small pits may form.
Duplex 2205 Temperature Capabilities
They can become hard at temperatures of 300-1000°C, so they should be used at -50°C to 300°C. Duplex 2205 flanges have a ductile to brittle transition when they get cold. A lot of heat will cause the 2205 flanges to become brittle, and this will make them less resistant to corrosion.
Duplex 2205 Grades, Chemistry & Specifications
Steel called Duplex 2205, UNS S32205, has a mixed microstructure that has about equal parts of ferrite and austenite. The name "Duplex" comes from this. 316 stainless steel is the most common grade. This two-phase material is a big improvement over 316 stainless steel in terms of both yield strength and corrosion resistance, though.
