The 7075 aluminium coil has long been the benchmark standard, boasting an ideal balance of properties essential for aerospace applications. As one of the highest-strength alloys available, it excels in highly stressed parts. While its corrosion resistance and machinability are rated as fair, the addition of chromium enhances stress-corrosion cracking resistance in 7075 aluminium sheet products. Similar to alloy 2024, this alloy can be obtained in bare form or clad for added corrosion protection.
7075 aluminium alloy plate from the 7xxx series is an impressive combination of aluminium, zinc, and magnesium, forming one of the most powerful commercial alloys with excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Renowned for its superhard nature, 7075 Al-Zn mg Cu alloy has been a staple in aircraft manufacturing since the late 1940s, maintaining its significance in the aviation industry to this day.
Notable for its outstanding plasticity after solution treatment, especially its potent heat treatment strengthening effect, it displays remarkable strength even below 150°C and excels in low-temperature conditions. However, its welding performance is subpar, and it exhibits a tendency for stress corrosion cracking, necessitating coating with aluminium or other protective treatments. Employing double aging can significantly enhance its ability to resist stress corrosion cracking, while its plasticity under annealing and quenching is marginally lower compared to the same conditions of 2A12.
Among its various forms, 7075t651 stands out as a top-grade option, widely regarded as the best aluminium alloy due to its exceptional performance. Demonstrating excellent mechanical properties and anodic reaction, it truly represents the epitome of aviation aluminium.
