WHAT IS HIC RESISTANT STEEL PLATE?

HIC Resistant Steel Plate is utilised by boiler manufacturers and fabricators when hydrogen-induced cracking is a significant concern.

HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) is the outcome of a corrosive reaction between carbon steel and hydrogen sulphide. Since the 1950s, wet hydrogen sulphide (H2S) cracking in steel has been a source of concern in the petroleum refining and upstream oil and gas processing industries. Working conditions in which wet H2S predominates are referred to as sour service conditions, and the term sour gas can also be used in this respect. As more fields rich in hydrogen sulphide (H2S) are exploited, as is increasingly the case, the problem becomes more severe for equipment made in potentially sensitive carbon-manganese (C-Mn) steels.

HIC Resistant Steel is carbon steel that has been tested according to NACE to show that it can stand up to the long-term effects of hydrogen-induced cracking. It happens when carbon steel is exposed to hydrogen sulphide (H2S). It is the direct result of electrochemical corrosion reactions between the sour service or wet H2S environment. Hydrogen Induced Crack (HIC) Pressure Vessel Plate has specific and better properties for sour gas applications. It is made in an electric arc furnace with dephosphorization, desulfurization, ladle refining, and vacuum degassing to create a steel that is uniform and very clean. It is especially good for equipment that is under pressure and where H2S corrosion from water can be a problem.

ASTM/ ASME SA516 is the grade of HIC resistant steel plate that is most often used. It is usually certified to 60, 65, and 70 grades, so one plate can meet the requirements for any of the three grades A516 60/65/70 + HIC. Oil and gas companies often use HIC Resistant Sheet. When hydrogen sulphide partial pressure is higher than 3.5mbar, the risk of this happening should be considered in industries, refineries, and pipelines that move oil and natural gas through wet hydrogen sulphide environments. It is the best choice for pressure vessels and boilers because it has been tested to make sure it doesn't crack when exposed to hydrogen. It is thought to be the best and most cost-effective solution, since carbon steel plate standard is more likely to corrode in sour service and wet H2S environments, and stainless steel is much more expensive.
